What Can a Chiropractor Treat? More Than You Might Think

When most people think of chiropractic care, they think of back pain. While chiropractors certainly help people with back pain every day, that’s only a small part of what we do.

One of the most common things we hear from new patients is, “I didn’t know a chiropractor could help with that.”

At our office, we help patients of all ages—from newborns to grandparents—move better, feel better, and get back to doing the things they love. Whether you’re dealing with headaches, pregnancy pain, a sports injury, or chronic discomfort that hasn’t responded to other treatments, chiropractic care may be able to help.

The Conditions We Most Commonly Treat

The most common reasons patients come to our office include:

  1. Neck pain
  2. Mid-back pain
  3. Low back pain
  4. Headaches
  5. Pregnancy-related pain
  6. Sports injuries

These conditions can affect everything from your ability to work and exercise to simply enjoying everyday activities. Our goal is not just to reduce symptoms but to identify and address the underlying cause of the problem whenever possible.

Chiropractic Care Is About More Than Back Pain

Many people are surprised to learn that chiropractors don’t only treat the spine.

We frequently help patients with:

Jaw Pain and Popping (TMJ)

Jaw discomfort, clicking, popping, and tension can often be related to muscle tightness, joint dysfunction, posture, and surrounding structures. Many patients are surprised to learn that chiropractic care can be part of their treatment plan.

Extremity Pain and Injuries

We regularly work with patients experiencing:

  1. Shoulder pain
  2. Wrist pain
  3. Hip pain
  4. Knee pain
  5. Foot and ankle pain

Just because pain isn’t located in your neck or back doesn’t mean chiropractic care can’t help.

Sports Injuries

Athletes place significant stress on their bodies. Whether you’re a competitive athlete, weekend warrior, or someone trying to stay active, we help patients recover from injuries and return to their sport as quickly and safely as possible.

Pregnancy-Related Pain

Many women assume pain is simply part of pregnancy. While some discomfort can occur, pregnancy does not have to be miserable.

We commonly help pregnant patients with:

  1. Pelvic pain
  2. Low back pain
  3. Hip pain
  4. Sciatic-type symptoms
  5. General pregnancy discomfort

One memorable patient came into our office during pregnancy using a cane because she could barely put weight on her right leg. After her first treatment, she was able to walk without the cane. While she still had some discomfort initially, within a few visits she became pain-free.

We also want expecting mothers to know that chiropractic care can continue throughout pregnancy. Many people mistakenly believe pregnant women cannot be adjusted close to their due date. In reality, care can be safely modified and provided right up until delivery when appropriate.

Pediatric Chiropractic Care

Another area that surprises many people is pediatric chiropractic care.

We commonly work with infants and children experiencing:

  1. Difficulty latching during breastfeeding
  2. Tension and feeding challenges
  3. Colic-like symptoms
  4. General musculoskeletal concerns

One of the most rewarding parts of our job is helping exhausted parents whose babies are struggling to nurse comfortably.

It’s important to understand that pediatric chiropractic care looks very different from adult chiropractic care. We do not perform forceful adjustments on infants. Treatment typically involves extremely gentle pressure—often no more pressure than you would comfortably place on your own eyeball.

Our Approach: More Than Just an Adjustment

One of the biggest misconceptions about chiropractic care is that we simply “crack backs.”

While adjustments are an important part of treatment, they are only one piece of the puzzle.

Depending on the patient’s condition and goals, treatment may include:

  1. Chiropractic adjustments
  2. Soft tissue and muscle work
  3. Rehabilitation exercises
  4. Stretching programs
  5. Dry needling
  6. Graston Technique
  7. Cupping therapy
  8. Lifestyle recommendations
  9. Supplement guidance

Every treatment plan begins with a thorough examination. We determine what a patient needs based on both our findings and the goals that are important to them.

After the first visit, patients typically receive customized exercises and stretches to perform at home. We review those exercises throughout care and modify them as needed.

The patients who achieve the best results are usually the ones who actively participate in their recovery. Treatment helps patients feel better, but consistent work outside the office helps them stay better.

A Real Example: Chronic Headaches

Headaches are another common reason patients seek care.

One teenage patient came to our office with constant headaches severe enough to cause frequent school absences. She had already seen a neurologist without significant improvement.

Within a few visits, her headaches were still present, but the intensity had decreased dramatically. More importantly, she was missing far less school and was able to participate more fully in daily life.

Stories like this remind us that success isn’t always about making symptoms disappear overnight. Sometimes success means helping someone return to living their life.

Do You Have to Keep Coming Forever?

Probably the biggest misconception we hear is:

“If I start seeing a chiropractor, I’ll have to keep coming forever.”

At our office, that is not our philosophy.

Our goal is to get patients out of pain, improve function, and help them become stable as quickly as possible. Once they reach that point, we release them from active care.

Some patients choose to return periodically because they enjoy maintenance care and how they feel afterward, but it is never something we require.

When Should You Not See a Chiropractor First?

Chiropractic care is not appropriate for every situation.

Certain symptoms require immediate medical attention, including:

  1. Loss of bowel or bladder control
  2. Sudden severe headaches
  3. Concerning high blood pressure readings
  4. Significant loss of muscle strength

A good chiropractor knows when chiropractic care is appropriate and when a patient should be referred to another healthcare provider or emergency care.

Patient safety always comes first.

Is Chiropractic Care Right for You?

Chiropractic care can benefit many people, whether you’re currently in pain, struggling to do the activities you enjoy, recovering from an injury, or simply trying to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.

However, it’s important to have realistic expectations.

Most patients do not become 100% better after a single visit. Many people have been dealing with their problem for weeks, months, or even years before seeking care. Recovery takes time, consistency, and participation from both the provider and the patient.

The Bottom Line

Chiropractors treat much more than back pain.

From headaches and pregnancy-related discomfort to sports injuries, jaw pain, extremity issues, and pediatric concerns, chiropractic care can help people of all ages move better and function better.

Most importantly, chiropractic care isn’t just about making joints pop. The best outcomes come from combining adjustments, soft tissue treatment, rehabilitation exercises, and patient involvement to address the root cause of a problem.

At the end of the day, our goal is simple: help you get back to doing the things you love—whether that’s playing with your grandkids, returning to the gym, competing in your sport, enjoying a pain-free pregnancy, or simply living your life without limitations.
