Prenatal Chiropractic Adjustments: What’s the Difference?

Pregnancy is one of the most incredible experiences your body can go through—but that doesn’t mean you have to spend nine months in pain.

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear from expecting moms is that aches and pains are “just part of pregnancy.” While discomfort is certainly common, it isn’t something you simply have to live with.

At our office, our philosophy is simple:

Pregnancy should be beautiful and as pain-free as possible. You should be able to enjoy this season of life—not dread it.

So, what makes a prenatal chiropractic adjustment different from a regular adjustment? Let’s take a closer look.

Yes, Chiropractic Is Safe During Pregnancy

The question we hear most often is:

“Is it safe to get adjusted while I’m pregnant?”

The answer is yes.

Research has shown that chiropractic care is considered safe during pregnancy when performed by a chiropractor trained to work with pregnant patients.

Many moms are understandably concerned about their baby. The good news is that we don’t adjust or treat the baby—that’s outside of our scope of practice. Our focus is entirely on mom’s muscles, joints, and pelvis.

By helping improve pelvic mobility and reducing tension throughout the body, we aim to create an environment where both mom and baby have more room to move comfortably.

How Prenatal Chiropractic Care Is Different

Pregnancy changes nearly every system in your body, so your chiropractic care should change too.

We Screen for Hypermobility

One of the biggest differences begins before we even perform an adjustment.

During pregnancy, the hormone relaxin helps prepare the body for birth by increasing ligament flexibility. While this is completely normal, it also means some joints become hypermobile instead of stiff.

During your exam, we determine whether your joints need:

● More mobility

● More stability

● Or a combination of both

If a joint is already moving too much, our goal isn’t to keep adjusting it. Instead, we focus on improving stability while treating the surrounding areas that may be contributing to your pain.

Every pregnancy—and every adjustment—is individualized.

We Modify Positioning for Your Comfort

Many patients are surprised when we tell them they can still comfortably lie on their stomach.

Our pregnancy tables and specialized support pillows safely accommodate your growing belly, allowing many moms to lie face down comfortably throughout much of their pregnancy.

As pregnancy progresses, we continue modifying positions to keep both you and your baby safe and comfortable.

We also avoid excessive twisting while you’re lying on your side and adjust our techniques based on how your body is responding throughout pregnancy.

We Modify Other Treatments Too

While chiropractic adjustments remain safe and effective during pregnancy, some therapies require modifications.

For example, we avoid treatments such as:

● Dry needling on the lower back

● Graston on the lower back

● Cupping on the lower back

If you have pregnancy-specific complications, such as placenta previa or other conditions, we modify your care accordingly and always work within safe guidelines.

What Happens During Your First Prenatal Visit?

If you’ve never seen a chiropractor while pregnant, here’s what you can expect.

First, we’ll spend time getting to know both you and your pregnancy.

We’ll discuss:

● Your current pain or discomfort

● How your pregnancy has been going

● Any pregnancy complications

● Your previous pregnancies (if applicable)

● Your medical history

● Your goals for pregnancy, labor, and delivery

● When you last saw your OB or midwife

Next, we’ll perform a thorough examination, including:

● Range of motion testing

● Orthopedic testing (when appropriate)

● Palpation

● Functional movement assessment

One important thing to know:

We do not assess baby’s position. That falls outside our scope of practice. Instead, our focus is helping your body move and function as well as possible throughout pregnancy.

After the exam, treatment typically includes:

● Chiropractic adjustment

● Muscle work

● Personalized home stretches and exercises

● Activity modifications when needed

We also email patients home exercises, partner-assisted stretches, and belly massage techniques when appropriate.

Your first visit typically lasts about 30 minutes, while follow-up visits are usually 15–20 minutes.

When Should You Start Prenatal Chiropractic Care?

Many women assume they should wait until they’re having pain.

We actually recommend the opposite.

Even if you’re feeling great, we often recommend beginning chiropractic care during the second trimester to help your body adapt as your pregnancy progresses.

If you’re experiencing discomfort, you can absolutely begin sooner.

And if you’re already 39, 40, or even 41 weeks pregnant?

It’s not too late.

Generally speaking, patients without pain may come about once a month until around 33–34 weeks, when we often increase the frequency of care as we help prepare the body for labor and delivery.

Every patient receives an individualized treatment plan based on their symptoms, goals, and pregnancy.

Conditions We Commonly Help Treat

Prenatal chiropractic care can help manage many common pregnancy-related aches and pains, including:

● Low back pain

● Pelvic pain

● SI joint dysfunction

● Sciatica

● Round ligament pain

● Pubic symphysis dysfunction (SPD)

● Hip pain

● Rib pain

● Neck pain

● Headaches

● Pregnancy-related carpal tunnel syndrome

Our goal is to help you stay active, comfortable, and able to enjoy your pregnancy.

Real Patient Stories

Every pregnancy is different, but these are two experiences that have stayed with us.

From a Walker to Walking Pain-Free

One patient came into our office relying on a walker because walking had become so painful during pregnancy.

After a combination of chiropractic adjustments and muscle work, she was able to walk out of the office without her walker.

Within just a few visits, she was pain-free.

Creating Space for Baby

Another patient came to us at 37 weeks pregnant with a breech baby after trying inversions, Spinning Babies®, and acupuncture without success.

Our goal wasn’t to “turn the baby.”

Instead, we focused on improving her pelvic mobility and reducing restrictions to create more space for baby to move naturally.

After two visits, she returned to her OB appointment where baby was found to be head-down.

While we can’t guarantee outcomes like this, stories like hers highlight why optimizing mom’s pelvic function can be so important.

We Work Alongside Your Healthcare Team

Prenatal chiropractic care should never replace your obstetric care—it should complement it.

We regularly work alongside:

● OBs

● Midwives

● Pelvic floor physical therapists

● Prenatal massage therapists

● Doulas

In fact, we’re proud to be one of the chiropractic clinics local OBs and midwives frequently refer their patients to.

We’ve had the privilege of caring for well over 1,000 pregnant patients, many of whom return during subsequent pregnancies.

When We Refer You Back to Your OB

Your safety always comes first.

If a patient develops a new, intense headache—especially if accompanied by elevated blood pressure or other concerning symptoms—we require evaluation by their OB before beginning treatment.

Knowing when chiropractic care is appropriate—and when medical evaluation should come first—is an important part of providing safe prenatal care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an adjustment hurt my baby?

No. We do not adjust or treat the baby. Our care is focused entirely on mom’s joints, muscles, and pelvis using pregnancy-specific techniques.

Can I lie on my stomach?

Usually, yes! We use specialized pregnancy pillows and adjustable tables that allow many expecting moms to lie comfortably and safely on their stomachs.

Is it too late to start chiropractic care?

Not at all. Whether you’re in your first trimester or 41 weeks pregnant, chiropractic care can still be beneficial.

Will I be sore afterward?

Some patients experience mild soreness, similar to starting a new workout, but many notice immediate pain relief and improved mobility.

Our Final Thoughts

One of the most important things we tell every expecting mom is this:

Pain during pregnancy is common—but it isn’t normal.

You don’t have to spend nine months simply trying to survive.

Every pregnancy is unique, and every woman deserves care that’s tailored to her body, her goals, and her experience.

Our job isn’t just to help relieve pain.

It’s to help you move better, sleep better, stay active, care for your family, prepare for labor, and enjoy one of the most exciting seasons of your life.

Because pregnancy should be something you remember with joy—not because of the pain.
